Leadership is a profound phenomenon. Its manifestation is subtle and individualistic.
Whilst there are job descriptions and intentions for any role, actually how the role is picked up by an individual has an unpredictable aspect that is flexible and continuously in definition.
This is Leadership: a shifting interplay of role definition between the individual and their organisation and between the person and their personal/ biographical self.
How each person brings their leadership into the role they play and the position they hold differs and varies
according to the individual and their relationship with their role. It will also vary according to the time of one’s life, the demands of the role and the particular organisation of operation.
Confluential Leadership is the consciousness of these influences coupled with the awareness of and recognition of personal style. It deals with intention, roles, power and presentation.

The theory of Confluential Leadership emerged out of extensive research for a PhD on leadership.
This approach evolved through the realisation that there is no essential leadership that is universally applicable in these times. Our evolving consciousness demands approaches that respect individuality and particularity.
People at this time are ready to be respected for who and how they are;
A leadership approach has to be broad enough to encompass the whole person within the collective field.
The theory draws on radical and inspirational thinkers in the fields of philosophy, consciousness, management studies and psychology.
Influences include leadership thinkers Mindell, Senge, Scharmer and Jaworski; philosophers Varela, Heidegger, Goethe, and Capra; Consciousness thinkers Laszlo, de Quincey; influential thoughtful colleagues Kaplan, Todres, Nielsen; gracious life itself.

Confluential leadership is part of a prevailing genre of leadership understanding where:
- consciousness and responsiveness supersede a prescriptive kind of leadership;
- leadership understood as a presence in the workplace enables others’ leadership to manifest;
- financial acquisition and the appearance of a harmonious environment are not enough.
- questions and curiosity are sacrosanct
- connection to the greater whole is constantly attended to.
Confluential Leadership workshops and training is for people who feel that there could or should be “something more” to their role. It could be a longing for greater happiness; for heightened engagement; for increased meaning in what you are doing.
To work out if this is for you, ask yourself :
- Do you sometimes feel some un-ease about your role?
- Does your mind seem to wander while working?
- Do you feel discontented without knowing exactly why?
- Are you looking for a ‘something more’ without even knowing what it may be?
- Do you feel more stressed about things, than is reasonable?
Confluential Leadership challenges participants to deconstruct what that ‘something more’ may be. It could be a radical or a subtle change. It may merely be an increased awareness leading to greater flexibility in thinking and action. The mild discomfort that has alerted you to the need for “something more” is the first step towards connecting with your inner wisdom. The next step could be participating in a process that helps you to understand the influences, and becoming aware of how you work with them. Even slight shifts of emphasis in relation to your life and how you operate, can have a profound and transforming impact.
